A square flower garden and a sidewalk around the the garden have an area of 400ft2.?

A square flower garden and a sidewalk around the the garden have an area of 400ft2. The sidewalk has a width of 3ft. What is the length of the one side of the flower garden?

A square flower garden and a sidewalk around the the garden have an area of 400ft2.?
so the one side of the sidewalk+garden is x+6 (uniform width around the garden) and a square's area is A=s^2

so you set up an equation:

400=(x+6)^2

and solve.

square root both sides to get:

+/- 20=x+6

so your answers are:

x=20-6=14ft

or x=-20-6=-26ft. you can't have negative length so ur answer is 14ft.
Reply:What times itself = 400? That's how wide the whole thing is. And there ts a 3 ft walk on either end of the garden so subtract (3+3) or 6 from the answer to the 400 part.
