I want to plant a little garden. What flowers/vegetable seeds should I buy that I can plant right away?

(Meaning I can plant them in June and have vegetables or flowers by summer's end.)

I want to plant a little garden. What flowers/vegetable seeds should I buy that I can plant right away?
It's a little bit late for planting seeds (by the time they're mature enough to produce veggies, the season will be winding down). I would recommend finding starts at your local nursery (young plants, a little older than seedlings). Zucchini and other summer squash are easy to grow and will reward you with lots of food, and there's nothing quite like a tomato from your garden! Basil is also super easy to grow, as are most herbs. Wander the aisles at your local nursery and see what looks good! Good luck!

Recommend some flowers and plants for my garden?

I am new at this flower bed stuff and i dont know my flowers and plants very well. I love doing it but i need some information on different types of plants that grow well in arkansas. Please let me know what plant you like and describe it to me or send picture. Just trying to get ideas for my own gardens. I love gardening and tropical type plants, but i like all flowers really.

Daylilies are a good choice as they are easy to maintain and come in a variety of colors. A mix of bulbs, spring and summer (tulips, Iris, etc) help to give color in down times. Sedum (tall variety with large flower head) gives you flowers in late fall and gives shape to your garden during the winter as well. One of my favorites is Lupin, depending on the variety they can be tall, short and a wide variety of colors. Another good one is Baptista, it looks almost like a shrub but gives excellent flowers, and year round form and interest.

Speaking of shrubs/bushes, one of the earliest blooming plants is Forsythia, vibrant bright yellow flowers make it stunning. Lilacs are excellent not only for scent but for color. Burning Bushes are also fun as they give excellent fall and winter color and if you look closely, they actually have green flowers. There are also evergreens like Rhododendron which will give you interest year round as well as flowers.

Check with your local nursery for varieties of these plants that do best in your area.

What colorful flowers do you recommend in my new garden!!?

I have recently pick up gardening and love flowers, I have hibiscus, sun seekers, pink roses, dragon snap, marigolds, and an orchid plant. Please give me more ideas!

What colorful flowers do you recommend in my new garden!!?
I am going to guess at your "growing zone" but flowers such as Zinneas, Petunias, Pansys will add lots of color and bloom throughout the summer. I would also check for Lillies, Tulips, Irises.....they only bloom for a short period of time but add Beauty and height, then I would delve into aromatic flowers / plants such as Jasmine. Whenever I designed a garden for customers I took into consideration eye appeal, color, scents, when plants/flowers bloomed and the wishes of the customer. Then you must consider annuals versus perennials, insects you may wish to attract or deter, some love to watch butterflies, bees etc while others have no interest. I suggest sitting down and making a list, Must Have, Would like to have, and Can live without......check out a local Nursery, spend an hour or two browsing, talking to the workers, find out about the plants you find appealing i.e. watering, fertilizing, maintenance, etc. Anyone can plant a garden, but being a successful gardener takes dedication and hard work......however the rewards are worth it.

Reply:I first tried planting rose bushes 7 years ago and now I'm hooked. Try your hand with different varieties by starting with one that is very hardy for your zone. I'm working on a rose garden and I'm up to 6 bushes now - I find tending them quite enjoyable! And there are so many variations...
Reply:Look into Daylilies. There are re-bloomers %26amp; colorful "everbloomers" ... that bloom all summer %26amp; in the fall season too. .. Stella D' Oro, Happy Returns, Pardon Me, %26amp; Rosy Returns, the first PINK everblooming Daylily.

Right now you can plant potted plants that are blooming like Bee Balm, Butterfly Bush (buddleia ), Coreopsis, Delphinum, Verbena, Echinacea (Coneflower), Blue sage, Salvia, Dianthus , Maltese Cross, Honesty (Lunaria), Geraniums, Lavender, Daylilies, Gaillardia, Black-Eyed Susan, Shasta daisy, Russian Sage %26amp; Veronica (Speedwell) %26amp; Hydranga.

The Knockout roses should do well throughout the summer %26amp; until frost too( if your area has frost). There's three diffferent varieties of Knockout roses %26amp; at least 3 varieties of Echinacea too ;)

Feast your eyes on these perennials:

I want to start a garden but don't know what flowers to use?

I only have a relatively small space to plant my garden... maybe 9 by 3 ft. I want either an English cottage theme or a Netherlands theme with tulips and such. What flowers would go well with these themes? What flowers could I pair with tulips?

I want to start a garden but don't know what flowers to use?
Pansies for the spring. For the summer, I like geraniums with verbena.
Reply:well, grow some annuals first that is easy for care. for example: those short flowers and easy for care. or get some perennial bulbs like tulips or lily or iris those are easy to plant, easy to grow, and blooms every year! once you get the experence with flowers , then you get some perennial seeds. and start indoor for the best result. then you dont have to plant new flowers every year! hope this helps!
Reply:Flower Garden Care is good web site that has gardening tips.
Reply:It would help to know how much sun the area gets and what zone you are in. You would want to plant tulips to grow in the spring along with daffodils. These bloom for a very short time. When they fade you can plant summer annuals that will give you color for the rest of the summer, depending upon the sun in your garden.
Reply:Go to a library and check out some books on what flowers do well in your area---having not one clue to where you live I can't answer your question. They will also have books on design and planting etc. Good luck.

What is the best fertilizer for my garden flowers and if threes another for grass in Phoenix ,AZ?

Cow manure for flowers. If you don't want to deal with that check out all the different brands like Miracle Grow at Home Depot.

Grass needs a higher nitrogen fertilizer. They have bags with numbers. 10 10 10 is okay for grass but you may have to get a spreader. An alternative would be the spray bottle fertilizer. You attach it to your garden hose and spray your grass. On the rare occasions I've needed to fertilize grass I've done that. My grass does fine with plenty of water.

What is the best fertilizer for my garden flowers and if threes another for grass in Phoenix ,AZ?
Well-rotted compost is the best thing you can add to your garden or flower beds.

Most communities offer free compost at the local landfill.

And for your grass, fertilize once in the fall with a granular fertilizer. If you buy the fertilizer, the hardware store will often loan you the spreader for free.

Or better yet, don't fertilize your lawn at all. It's not all that necessary and just adds more chemicals to the groundwater.

I want some ideas on a flower garden will have a tree near it . like flowers?

i have coneflowers, tuplips lilies but need sugestions i want it to be full i love to see hummingbirds

I want some ideas on a flower garden will have a tree near it . like flowers?
If you want to attract humming birds, you need the color red and orange. They love flocks, butterfly weed, and butterfly bush.

Aside from the nectar filled flowers which you will grow, a good hummingbird garden must also consist of an entire habitat for the birds.

Make certain that there is always fresh water available for drinking as well as for bathing.

Create both sun and shade areas in your hummingbird garden. Hummingbirds need a place in shade to perch as well as to build their nests.

Willows and Eucalyptus trees provide nesting materials which your hummingbirds will use, along with bits of leaves, spider webs, moss, and lichens to build their tiny nests.

Hummingbirds must feed 3-5 times per hour and your hummingbirds may become reliant on your garden for it's food, but there may be periods when there are no blossoms from which they can get nectar. It is a good idea to provide hummingbird feeders hung about thirty feet apart throughout your garden for these times. The best color for a feeder is bright red to attract the birds from a distance. Never fill your feeders with anything but sugar-water mix of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Do not use food coloring of any kind, and never, never use honey. (Honey can develop a fungus which can be fatal to hummingbirds)

Keep your feeders clean and filled!
Reply:Depending on what sort of tree you are talking about it can be difficult for anything to grow close by. The root system on an establishing or established tree will take all the moisture from the ground. Keep the area moist around the tree it can end up like dust in the warm weather.

Fushia is nice, plenty of pink/red flowers when established, plant bulbs in the autumn like tulips/daffodils etc also. Be sure to keep the area moist around the tree it can end up like dust if the over hanging foliage covers the plants.

Herbs work wonders. I'd say easy to care for, hanging plants, (purple jews work well..), potted patio plants like blueberries are nice, as for flowers, morning glories, stuff like that.

How do I keep weeds out of my perrenial garden without digging up my flowers to put a weed mat under them?

I don't want to use a weed mat becuase then I would have to dig up all of my already planted flowers to get the mat under them. I want somthing to keep out weeds and make my garden look more tidy. Prefferably somthing that will stop the weeds from growing thier deep roots like they do in my area.

How do I keep weeds out of my perrenial garden without digging up my flowers to put a weed mat under them?
There's a product called "Preen" that you can incorporate into the soil that prevents weeds from growing. It's safe to use around perrenials and annuals (the desirable plants in your garden). People I know swear by the stuff and put a good dose of it on in the spring and then again do a maintenance sprinkling of it in mid-summer. It's a granual product.
Reply:Whichever method you decide to use you MUST remove the weeds, roots and all, before you start or you'll have the same problem again. Preen is my favorite.
Reply:If you weed the area out very well and use a ground cover such as bark a couple of inches thick it will keep the weeds manageable. If you pick out the weeds as they are just starting it's easy to keep up. The bark keeps the light from germinating the weed seeds.
Reply:You could use a thick layer of mulch, it will help retain moisture in the soil, keeps the soil/roots cool in summer. Some weeds will push through, but not as many, and they're usually easier to pull out too as the root in the mulch and not the soil.

What kind of flowers from my outside garden can I bring indoors in potts?
Hi!

Geraniums live well on a sunny windowsill, some herbs like thyme, rosemary, parsley, begonias, petunias will last for a while, impatiens, tagetes(marigold),

All the ones that are labelled tender perennials can survive on a very sunny windowsill with good care.

The best is to try out, who knows, you might end up with happy surprises!
Reply:I think you could bring in most plants in pots but there are some that you MUST bring in if you want them to survive till next year. I am in Zone 7 and I have to bring in my mandevilla, bouganvilla and purple heart plants. I tried to winter over some blackie sweet potato but wasn't very successful. Most plants will do well if given a nice sunny window to sit in till winter is over.

Is it a safe rule of thumb to dead head all your garden flowers?

This is about my 5th year working hard in the yard. I have really been learning a lot but have so much more to learn!!!

Is it a safe rule of thumb to dead head all your garden flowers?
Annuals, yes BUT, BIG BUT, it depends on the time of day. For example, gazania flowers close up on cloudy days or at night so they need to be deadheaded on a bright day. Marigolds, dead head any time, petunias, same thing, except wave petunias, do not dead head for best results. Snapdragons should be pinched when set out before they flower for best results, celosia, do not dead head and if flower looks dead the plant is infected. Pansies and violas to not like the heat, however about this time of year cut them back to about 2 inches and keep watered and in some cases fall flowers will result. Pinch coleus at planting time for best results, zinnias have to be deadheaded constantly. Impatiens and begonias do not. Most mums need two or three pinchings starting now and again in a few weeks for best results except some belgian varities. Most perrinials should have their flower stalks cut back after flowering so the engergy goes to the plant instead of creating seed. But snot so for vines such as clematis. Anything specific you need to as just let me know.
Reply:deadheading is a good practice to encourage re-blooming. it diverts the plant's energy to growth and reflowering instead of seed production. there's a certain point in time when the plant will stop blooming and there's nothing you can do to make it bloom more.

It won't hurt to deadhead, so keep on.

the only thing is, you may not get "free" plants next year as a result of re-seeding on the part of the plants.

I am planting a flower garden in my front yard. Should I wait for flowers to sprout before adding mulch?

or will adding mulch after they sprout hurt or weigh down the new sprouts?

I am planting a flower garden in my front yard. Should I wait for flowers to sprout before adding mulch?
No, definitely mulch as you plant them. They will easily poke their heads through the mulch and won't do any damage to the plants, unless they're really small when you should only put a thin layer of mulch over the top. Mulch is very important as it retains moisture in the soil and suppresses weeds, giving your flowers an even better chance of survival. Good luck with your new plants.
Reply:No, mulch helps retain moisture and also breaks down to provide nutrients, this is needed when you plant. Don't put the mulch on top of the plant only around it.
Reply:yes you should wait untill they are at lease 1inch above ground then u can mulch

I love this website; it shows a lot of good detail: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/
Reply:Why not pay a visit to your local Garden Centre. Ask them if they would be willing to come to your house and identify some plants for you. I own a Garden Centre and I do this on a regular basis. I also tell customers when and how to prune if it's needed. These customers tend to call back when they need something.

Once you know the names of the plants then you can visit the RHS site and look through their list of poisonous plants. It's better to do it this way as some safe plants can look the same as poisonous plants and you could end up digging out the safe ones and leaving in the poisonous ones.

Hope this helps you.
Reply:If you know that little about plants and you are really concerned about the children you are minding, forget websites.

Hire a landscaper who is capable of identifying everything and who can explain it to you in terms you understand. If (s)he can't identify it or explain it to you so you understand it, have it torn out and (maybe) replaced with something you do understand.

There really are no "shortcuts" when it comes to protecting children.

How do I keep birds from eating flowers in my container garden?

I have also seen squirrels and chipmunks, so I bought Shake Away--it seemed to work for the most part if I keep putting it out there. I also bought a pinwheel and some hologram ribbon that is supposed to keep birds away, but these have not worked--the birds keep going into the containers. I've replaced some of my flowers already, and when I see that they've been dug up (sometimes they've been removed completely and put on the ground) I just replant and hope that the roots take hold again. I have always lived on the second floor with a porch garden, and never had problems like this, even though there were a lot of birds. Now I'm on the first floor and I can't get them to stay away. There were a lot of neighbors that had bird feeders, and management requested they be removed because the squirrel problem was getting worse. Are they so hungry now they are going for the flowers? I cannot put moth balls out, since they cause me to have an asthma attack. Any suggestions would help!

How do I keep birds from eating flowers in my container garden?
You can try sound at different intervals--loud bangs or such to scare the little buggers away. Of course there is always my huskies!!! Or maybe a cat--my Murphy hunts extremely well and chases all the birds from the lawn!

Birds are tough because you are not always there to shoo them away. My daughter just emailed a picture of a nest of hatchlings in her hanging annual plant off her front pourch. They do not harm the flowers, just nest between them.

Also you may try to go a season without any containers to see if they forget about you next year!

may you should feed them so they leave the flowers alone!!

In any event good luck! Jane

What is a flower garden weed that is completely maroon with tiny yellow flowers?

The weed is completely maroon. The leaves look like upside down hearts and are arranged in a "four leaf clover look-a-like "pattern. Instead of the leaf spread out flat, it hangs down thus making it look like an upside down heart. The stalk and leaves are solidly maroon in color.

I believe you are describing Oxalis. There is an ornamental plant called: Oxalis regnellii atropurpurea, which is pictured in the link. There are many other oxalis, and lots of those are weeds. Further, some oxalis do bloom yellow. I have also seen pink blooms on plants with maroon foliage.

Differences in greenhouse (florist's) flowers and garden (home gardeners) flowers.?

im doing a research paper on florist's flowers vs. garden roses and i need more things that are different between the two

Differences in greenhouse (florist's) flowers and garden (home gardeners) flowers.?
I once had a job that involved, in part, developing new cut flowers for the florist trade. The specifications were that the plant needed to have flower stems that could be cut 3 feet long; that the flowers could be shipped without dying in the process; and that the flowers should last at least 3 weeks in a vase. Ideally flowering of the plant could be controlled so that flowers could be produced at any time of year, in a variety of climates, that the plant would be resistant to insects and diseases that could damage the flowers, and would be available in an assortment of colors.

If you were developing flowers for home gardeners, your selection criteria would be somewhat different. You would also want insect and disease resistance, but your emphasis would be much more for variety of colors, and fragrances, compact growth, flowering in one season, and things like tolerance of different soil types, drought tolerance, etc.. Things like long stems, shipping tolerance, and long vase life would not be nearly as important for a home gardener, as they would be for a florist. On the other hand, most home gardeners would want a variety of flowers, not just dozens of red roses for valentines day.

A rose by any other name smells as sweet (probably not an exact quote from Shakespeare), but the flowers a florist uses have a different purpose than flowers a home gardener uses. I hope this helps.

What do I so to stopsomeone(?)from running over my garden w a car destroying plantes, flowers?

I thought about spike stip (I was so mad). I want him to respect me, leave me alone.

What do I so to stopsomeone(?)from running over my garden w a car destroying plantes, flowers?
Well, I was going to tell you to notify the police, but since you already said you did... There are several things you can do.

First, you could keep calling the police and bugging them until something is done. Or, you could even press charges against him for vandalism, however, since you really haven't seen him actually doing this, it would be a thick case to prove.

Second, I have never encouraged revenge by human beings. This is something I believe comes through karma or the act of God. However, if nothing is being done by your local law enforcement department, then, perhaps you may have to do something yourself.

A. You could always put carpenter's tacks under his rear tires. But, you have to make sure they are the tacks, because they are thicker and even if he knocks some over with the backing up motion, (that's if he pulls into the driveway and doesn't back in), then even the ones that weren't knocked over should go right through the tire rims. If he comes to you accusing you of doing this, you can just say to him that you didn't see anything and besides, where is your proof. However, you must make sure this is done at night, in the hours on your street when it's least busiest.

B. You could always dump sand or sugar into his gas tank.

C. You could put glue over the keyholes to both sides of his car door locks.

D. There's also cutting his battery cords on the inside of his engine.

E. Smearing dog dung all over his windshield.

F. Placing a banana into his tailpipe.

Depending on what you call horendous actions against you, because we all associate various reactions with our own personality type. From what you have said here, this man is in simple, evil and needs to be corrected. Everything I'm suggesting here is something I wouldn't do, so heed the warnings to these such recommendations as you are fully responsible for everything that you commit to.

There's also the last straw. This is something I was told by an old friend who is an auto mechanic. He heard this by another associate he used to work with who did this to somebody in a situation much like yours.

By taking a fire cracker and a fuse, take the fuse and tape it to the tailpipe so that it is secure, run the fuse under the rear hub of the tire and along the course of the underside of the car or truck. Make certain you have enough fuse to do this. Tape the fuse in varying spots so that it's secured properly. Make sure the tape isn't too tight however, or else when the fuse is activated, it will be blocked by the tape. Duct tape is recommedned or the industrial version of duct tape, which is shiny silver. At the end of the fuse is obviously the firework. Place the firecracker into the gas tank.

Through proper ignition of the fuse from the heat of the tailpipe, the fuse will be activated and eventually detonate in the gas tank. The person who did this said when they saw this happen, the truck that it was done to did not completely explode, but, rather had the gas cap blow off. Like I said, something this serious I don't encourage and would not even recommend trying it because the effects could vary considerably.

If you want to get back at this person, you must use your own judgement very carefully.

I wish you the best of luck in resolving this serious matter.
Reply:Large rocks...I have seen other people with the same problem and they have gone and gathered "big rocks" and put them along the border of the garden and the road...

He won't want to rip a hole in his "oil pan" which will happen if he hits the rocks..
Reply:Place rocks just %26gt;that%26lt; much taller than Bad Boy's bumper on all sides of your garden that has had tire tracks in it. Call around to your local garden centers, and ask for pricing on what are called "one-man rocks" or "two-man rocks" ("one-man" and "two-man" indicates how many average men it takes to lift the rock). If Bad Boy's vehicle is a car, one-man rocks should do, but if Bad Boy has a truck, go for the two-man rocks. The rocks will make it harder to drive over your garden; two man rocks will make it harder for Bad Boy to move them himself. If some one *does*, it not only will make some serious noise, there's a good chance that your vandal will snagged on one or more of the rocks. If this should happen, well, then, you call the police, and let *them* handle the situation -- most especially if it *IS* Bad Boy. If Bad Boy asks what you're doing when you bring in the rocks, smile and say something about an article in a home and garden magazine that talked about landscaping with rocks, and leave it at that.

The above technique worked very well for a family that lived on the corner in my old neighborhood.

I would like to know what garden flowers will grow and flourish beneath a Copper Beech tree?

You will do best with plants listed for "dry shade." Impatiens or Achimenes will tolerate more shade than most, but may still find it difficult to produce many blooms in such dark shade. They will need lots of watering, too. I would stick with leafy plants that have pretty patterns or variegation on the leaves so that it will not matter if they bloom or not. Daffodils and some other bulbs can grow and bloom near the edge of the shadow of the branches ("the dripline") because they bloom before the beech leaves form in the spring.

Who knows how to keep squirrels from eating the flowers in your garden?
I've had this same exact problem with squirrels eating my bulbs.

One word.... MOTHBALLS!!

Well, maybe that's two, but I'm telling you, it works like a charm! The squirrels haven't touched my garden since. You can get mothballs at dollar stores, home and garden stores, pretty much anywhere. You just have to ask around.

Once you get the mothballs, place two balls beside each flower, and bury it about half and inch or less into the soil. Squirrels and other small pests HATE the smell of mothballs, and they will stay away from your flowers. Guaranteed.

The mothballs will not kill your flowers either, so don't worry about that. You can pretty much put as much mothballs down as you please. The only thing that sucks it that they're a little bit stinky... but hey, it works!!

Good luck!
Reply:Fast way, sprinkle Cayenne pepper all around the perimeter. This will also help prevent wandering cats from using your freshly turned soil as a litterbox. Then go to salons in your area and ask for hair clippings (it's always washed before it's cut). Sprinkle the hair clippings all around the perimeter of the garden as well. This deters all kinds of critters.

Are you sure it's not rabbits eating your plants? I have never had squirrels eat my flowers.

If your flowers are just dying and not disappearing, you may have moles eating the roots. Look for mole holes elsewhere in your yard. Moles are attracted to freshly dug or turned soil as it is easy for them to navigate.

One way to get rid of moles is to take sticks of Juicy Fruit gum, split it in half lengthwise and push the sticks of gum down into mole holes. They eat it and go away to die. It has to be Juicy Fruit though, something about the smell being like flowers. It is way less costly and gross than traps. Don't believe the underground vibration things, they don't work.
Reply:I have a couple of squirrels who visit my fire escape in the city and chow down on my potted plants, stripping them totally of leaves.

First attempt: cayenne spray (powder + water) -- seemed to be like salad dressing to them. No good.

2nd attempt: garlic chopped up and place on the soil. More salad dressing.

3rd attempt: mothballs. They stink and it's horrible with my window open. But it does work around the leaves close to the ground. HOWEVER the morning glory vines climb the trellis and those upper stems have become a frickin' salad bar!!

And I have since read online that mothballs can leach into the soil and aren't good for the plants either.

Currently I have resorted to a large clear plastic bag over the trellis and that is keeping them away as I search for a solution.

100% Essential Peppermint Oil has been recommended and that will be my next try.

How can I make my house smell like a garden of flowers?

I want to know a cheap way to keep my house smelling good (like a garden) with out buying all those exspensive plug in air freshners and candles?

How can I make my house smell like a garden of flowers?
I think your question pretty much answers it for you: flowering plants absorb smells and, particularly when they are flowering, release fragrant and relaxing smells.

Plants will also brighten the appearance of your house, add fresh oxygen (through photosynthesis) and even lift your mood!

Plants aren't that expensive, especially at this time of year (fall) when most garden centres are trying to get rid of their stock. The first website below gives great advice on fragrant plants and the second has advice on how to care for them. It's not difficult just a few minutes every few days to water and turn your plants.

Good luck!
Reply:CLEAN WITH FABULOUS IT HAS A FRESH LAVENDER SMELL THAT LASTS FOR HOURS
Reply:I open my windows for at least 20 - 30 minutes each day. I find that keeping them closed all of the time makes the air smell "stale". Toxins also build up in your house, so you need the fresh air to keep it smelling frsh and clean! : )

As far as smelling like FLOWERS.. : )

Nothing can beat this:

Bath and Body Works [White Barn Candle Co.]

Room Sprays : )

They are very potent [you only need 1 -2 sprays],

smell great [they have about 20 different scents], and inexpensive! : )

Here is the link!

You can smell all 20+ scents in person, if you go to the store at the mall! : )

: ) Good luck! : )
Reply:make your own potporie. that's what i do and it works well. Take dried rose leaves, a cinommon stick and some scented oil (some perfumes are like this) pour a little of the oil on the leaves and cinommon sticks, shake it all up and put it in a dark corner for about a day, then you can display it nicely on a table or something, and it smells pretty good.

You could also use incense (it's like ten cents a stick at long's) the only problem with that one is that it can irritate your skin.

Good luck!

But we usually put some of them in our house, in different rooms

When you transport flowers in the garden, why should you take the roots up with a ball of earth about them?

When you transport flowers in the garden, why should you take the roots up with a ball of earth about them-rather than just lossening the soil a pulling out the roots?

When you transport flowers in the garden, why should you take the roots up with a ball of earth about them?
The roots of most plants are similar to the veins/arteries in our bodies. There is a branching network of increasingly smaller roots until they get to what are called the root hairs. These tiny root vessels play a similar role to the capillaries in our bodies. They are where most of the exchange of water and nutrients are absorbed into the plant from the soil. You don't want these vital parts of a plant to dry out or be destroyed.

When you remove the soil around a plant, you damage many of these small root hairs, and it limits the plants ability to absorb the water and nutrients from the soil, and it severely stresses the plant until it can grow new ones (if it has energy enough to do so), and may make it more likely to die. The bare root plants that you can buy are removed from the soil after the plant has gone dormant in the Fall, and since it is not actively growing, it can grow new ones in the Spring using the energy it stored up for the winter.
Reply:So the roots do not dry out and so you do not disturb the root ball too much. The less that the roots are disturbed the better, the seedling/plant, will transplant far better if you take care in this area.

Always water in, and never transplant during the heat of the day, late afternoon is best.
Reply:One reason is to keep the roots from drying out... that will kill the plant, the other is to keep the roots in soil they are used to, till they adjust to the new soil where you are moving the plant.
Reply:Hello angelbaby,

When transplanting flowers you need to take the soil around the plant to keep from shocking the plant anymore than necessary to get the job done. Handle the roots gently. By doing this the plant will flourish much faster.

Disc the grass under. A few patches will start growing again, but a second discing will kill them.

It sounds like you need information on container and/or patio gardening. Here is a link to a good website that covers the information you need:

http://www.greenpatio.com/

One of the biggest concerns with the plants you choose will be the effect the wind has on them at that elevation. Keep in mind that they will dry out quicker than at ground level and will need more frequent watering. You can pick and choose species based on these environmental facrtors.

Good luck with your urban highrise gardening endeavors.
Reply:I would go with petunia's (wave petunia's will hang down--would your windy area tug and break them off?). Together with petunia's I would go with geranium, marigold and the deep burgundy sweet potato vines. A little miracle grow fertilizer in your watering can will keep them thriving in patio planters.

Deadhead the flowers (pick the dead heads off) to keep them blooming throughout summer.
Reply:I live in an area with a similar climate and Ive done small containers before.. I did a really small bowl or basket with a dracena spike in the back, a geranium for color in the middle and an ivy draping over the front. Throw in some dusty miller for texture and foliage. It's a very hardy and long lived mix.

Try laying a lifleike rubber snake near the plants, also there are plastic Owl statues that you can place nearby that might work as well, keep in mind though that an urban bunny may be hard up for decent greens, and don't be too hard on the little guys. Life is tough at the bottom of the food chain

could be snails. sprinkle snail pellets around the ground. works like a charm. snails love to eat lots of different kinds of flowers. also could be clusters of eggs of some kind of insect. keep an eye on the flowers. if they dont come to any harm from the alien blob hurray for you. i would watch it just to see what came out of it.

Reply:If you or your gardener used a water retaining gel it is very possible that this is what you see. Dig it into the soil it will help in drought situations.

Is there a product that a person can spray in the a flower garden to kill weeds without killing the flowers?

My gardener just planted flowers in front of my house, but he didn't put plastic or mulch down first...now, weeds are popping up everywhere and it would take forever to pull them all. So, I'm curious...is there a product that can be sprayed in areas like that where the flowers are close together without harming the flowers?

Is there a product that a person can spray in the a flower garden to kill weeds without killing the flowers?
Almost all of the weed killers will also kill your flowers. I was told that you could use Weed Be Gone too and I ended up with dead weeds and flowers. Your best bet is to take a heavy rake and rough up the existing mulch. Then add a layer of heavy mulch on top. The weeds should die back under another heavy mulching. Wait a few days then pull out the few stragglers that make it through. Most mulches actually have seeds for weeds in them, scary isn't it. Make sure you find mulch that has been heated or frozen to kill the seeds or you'll just get more weeds. I hope this helps and Good Luck!!!

Reply:Yes go to Home Depot, they will help you with your delimna. The garden people are very helpful there./
Reply:Round up and weed be gone will kill everything. I know it stinks, but your best bet is to pull everything that you can by hand and then add another two to three inches of mulch. If there is mulch down already be sure to fluff it up with a rake first so it does not compact and prevent water from getting through.

When can i plant my garden and flowers???

We are suppose to get snow this weekend should i wait to plant my flowers( they are seeds)... should i plant them now or wait until may like it says too... when should i plant my garden? I started the tomato plants inside when are they ready to go into the ground???

When can i plant my garden and flowers???
Well for one. We don't know where you live. I live in Wisconsin.

And we always wait until around the end of May to plant. Cause there is always that chance for that frost.

carrots or anything that grows under ground can be planted a little earlier, but make sure you keep them covered.

But, you best bet is to wait then take the chance of a frost damaging or killing your seedlings.

I know one is always tempted to put things in the ground early. But if you get frost, then you end up having to go and get more plants, seeds, etc.

Good luck
Reply:You can start your seeds inside, just like you did the tomato plants. Unfortunately you do have to wait to work the garden outside until after the chance of freezing temperatures.

I know how hard it it to wait!

The Garden Lady
Reply:Hi:

I agree with some of the other answers. One of the biggest things you need to wait for is the ground and air temperature to warm up. You can start your seeds inside. Your planting season starts in May, so get a head start on your garden now, by germinating seeds.

I will link you to the spice and herb section of my website. There is a page on growing herbs from seeds. This process is good for vegetables and also flowers. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through as there are many articles, tips and techniques that may give you some additional information.

Good luck to you and wait until that ground temperature warms up so the roots of the plants can get established in the ground. Have a great day!

Best way to take care of flowers in a garden?

I have a small garden filled with flowers but i don't know what is the best thing to do to take care of them. Does anyone have a solution on what i should do?

Best way to take care of flowers in a garden?
You must live in a very different climate to me...however, when my flowers are in bloom, I deadhead them regularly to encourage them to flower for longer. To deadhead means taking off the fading blooms with thumb and finger or secateurs.

This works as the flower wants to produce seed and flowering is the way to do this. By deadheading you are thwarting it and it keeps having to make more flowers to make the seed.

Will spraying a Weed Herbicide on Flowers and garden kill my plants?

I bought this product called Weed-Out which claims will kill all kinds of broadleaf weeds such as dandelions from my lawn. I just attach it to my hose and spray away. Can someone tell me, i have a garden next to my lawn and so when i spray this weed herbicide will it kill my flowers and bushels too if i spray the liquid on them too? The grass seems fine so i am guessing this weed herbicide is selective in killing just the weeds?

Will spraying a Weed Herbicide on Flowers and garden kill my plants?
Herbicides are designed to kill weeds and unwanted plants.

They are either selective, non selective or broad spectrum. A broad leaf herbicide is a selective herbicide that WILL harm flowers, vegetables and plants. It is designed to NOT harm grass. You are correct ...it is selective in killing the broad leaf weeds, which would include most flowers and plants. When in doubt read the label.
Reply:I certainly would be concerned that it would. I have many small violets and another small flowering ground plant that I had bought years ago and with all this years rain and a new irrigation system they have spread all over the lawn. I am planning on putting down a weed and feed to get rid of them. I unlike you, am hoping it works. Talk to someone at a local nursery and good luck.
Reply:The answer is yes. It will kill your garden plants. They are broadleaf plants.
Reply:it depends on the type and brand of hebicide you have, there are different herbisides that are flower safe

How do I stop cats and dogs from peeing on my flowers and garden?

I used something called Stay Away a while back.I'm not sure they make that particular product any longer, but you can always ask the sales assoc. @ PetsMart. that's what they are there for! Good Luck, I know it is disappointing to work so hard to get your yard looking nice for some stray to come mess it all up!

I am planting a flower garden from seed in Yucca Valley CA, what flowers grow best in that desert area?

I am moving to Yucca Valley in Jan(from Ohio) and want to be prepared to plant the seeds in early spring. I want flowers that will grow in the natural desert soil without adding topsoil and ones that wont need much watering after they are established. I have a lot of area to work with so I want to do areas with wildflowers and also regular flowers. Ive been doing tons of searches but surprisingly enough cannot find any one book or source for desert flowers, so am trying to figure it out by searching :

arid soil, sandy soil, zone 9, full sun etc and then trying to pick out ones common to all the lists. Unfortunately, while I have found a lsome useful information about wild flowers, I've found very little on *regular* flowers.. So if anyone has experience with flower gardening in the Mojave/desert any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much . Mykiel

I am planting a flower garden from seed in Yucca Valley CA, what flowers grow best in that desert area?
Hi Mykiel My grand father who lived in Phoenix loved his roses they loved the hot dry climate(no fungus, black spot or mildew) I always love wildflowers in the spring and with the record rain fall a couple years back flowers were blooming in Death Valley, now it's moved back to us the rain(I live in Seattle WA(Flooding everywhere)) want water come and take all you want right now. Sorry back to wild flowers with water they will grow through growing season to mid summer if having enough water (pray for rain)

Have you Looked at Sunset Western Garden Book.I've had a copy for twenty years on my second book now.

I would sow your wildflower seed as soon as you can because they do take root early even under snow to race above all the others for rites, I love wildflowers

Send me some pic of your achievements I'd love to see it Good Luck and the Gods be with you (I'm part American Indian) I have some succulents that would be interesting to try there one is from Russia and the other is a beautiful maroon with grayish tipped pads about the size of a dime, very pretty good Luck again Chris

Book recommendations for how to plan for when your garden flowers bloom?

Are there any specific books out there, that can help me with timing my garden?

So I know when I should plant certain seeds and bulbs to bloom at a certain time (for example, early spring), and then perfectly overlap with other seeds and bulbs that open in the following periods (mid to late spring, summer, etc)

I am asking specifically in regards to what seeds are best planted over spring bulbs like tulips, etc.

Thanks

Planting my flowers and getting a flower garden?

I have a strip of lawn in the front of my house that I want to turn into a little flower garden. How do I go about it, because all that is there now is grass? Do I just dig up all the grass chunks along with the dirt? Is there anything to do to stop the grass from growing back? Any help would be appreciated.

Planting my flowers and getting a flower garden?
It depends on the type of grass you have. A grass with strong under ground stems called Rhizomes will need more than just a spade or rototilling to prevent re-sprouting in your new flower garden. Just a small part of a Rhizome (the white underground stems) can regenerate a new grass plant. The best way to spread this kind of grass is with a rototiller. Kentucky Bluegrass %26amp; quackgrass spread by Rhizomes.

Another kind of grass spreads by above ground horizontal stems called stolons. Your tif greens in the southwest spread this way. Again, just a small piece of the stolon can regenerate into more grass. In fact, this is a comon way to create a lawn when the hybrid seeds are sterile as with the hybrid tif greens.

A bunch grass grows in circular bunchs and spreads much like a perennial flower. The bunches just spread outward. Bunch grasses are the easiest to dig-up. Tall fescue is a type of bunch grass (they may also have very weak rhizomes, but they are considered a bunch grass).

For Rhizomonous and Stolonous grasses, I would recommend a systemic herbicide like Round-up when the grass is actively growing. Spray, wait two weeks, spray again. After another two weeks you can spade or rototill that grass and plant your flower garden.
Reply:Sure. Strip the grass away and put down an edge between the bed and the grass. Could be steel, plastic, stone, or pavers. Then till the soil to about 12" depth using a good mixture of existing soil and organic mix. Thoroughly mix it all together. Then your ready to plant everything you want. Make sure you water it in, but do not flood. Plants need water and air to thrive. Be sure to also mulch good. At least 2 inches of a good wood mulch. Good luck
Reply:You can do that. Or- and I think you'll find this is easier- you can build a raised bed or use a technique called lasagna gardening.

What that is is that you put several layers of newspaper at the bottom. Then you add compost, vegetable leftovers, coffee grounds, leaves, and perhaps even peat moss and mulch. And other things that are good for the soil.

There are books out about it.

Good luck!
Reply:Yes, You just dig up the grass. A SPADE works best; it's like a pitchfork, but with thicker and stronger forks arranged flat instead of like a basket. Be sure to shake the excess dirt from the pieces of sod you remove, your future bed will need it.

Now go to your local home and garden store and purchase a roll of flower bed edging. This is a flat roll of plastic about five or six inches wide and is used to keep the grass back.

Just Dig a trench around the edge of your new bed about one to two inches wide and then place the edging in the trench. Then fill in the trench with dirt and pack it in to place.

your flower bed is now edged.

Then talk to your home and garden employee to see what plants do best with your location and follow planting instruction. Be sure to water after planting, make sure all the soil is wet. Now sit back and enjoy the beauty!
Reply:Till the dirt. If you can not get a machine or the landscaping space is not broad enough for a machine just turn the dirt yourself. Dig it up, flip it over, dip it up, flip it over. Thats is. And remember to look in the gardening section @ precious-presents.com for all your home and gardening needs!

Reply:I wouldn't do that--check with your local nursery about low maintenance flowers and shrubs. Because by the time you plant those plastic flowers, depending on where you live, you will have one of two things happen.

You'll either have agitated neighbors knocking at your door with a petition to have homeowners association fine you, or your new plastic glories will blend in nicely with your next door neighbor's pink flamingos.
Reply:You can, but you'd have to make sure you buy REAL looking flowers, I've seen way to many easily spotted fakes out there. But I do have a neighbor who hangs fake wisteria baskets %26amp; they are beautiful!! There is a fine line between nice %26amp; trailer trash! Good luck!
Reply:Well..I guess you can but that's not really planting. I suggest you go to a nursery and ask for flowers that require very little care.
Reply:Yes, you can put fake flowers in the ground. I have a tiny pet cemetary in a clearing in the woods behind my house. I have fake flowers on the two graves there. They last quite a while, and look good if you choose wisely. However, the sun will fade them after a few months.
Reply:we used to put silk daffodils in a couple of planters by the front door in the spring. then I used to plant real flowers for the summer. and in the winter we would put silk poinsettias in the same planters. worked for us. and it looked pretty!

How do you kill moss in a flower garden without killing the flowers?

I have tried wood ash and lime. I do not want to kill the flowers, but the moss is getting thicker. I have torn it out, but it is spreading into my lawn as well as the the garden.

How do you kill moss in a flower garden without killing the flowers?
try a product called, "moss out" , it comes in liquid, or granules,.....i think, but not sure that it has a high copper content,.....used it on my lawn, it killed the moss, but not the grass
Reply:Pull it out -- that is the best way you can go without killing your other plants. And continue applying lime to condition the soil and minimize the moss growth.
Reply:contact ortho or roundup or spectracide

What are some easy flowers I can grow in my backyard garden?

I want to make a small flower garden. what are some easy growable flowers that can stand humid weather?

What are some easy flowers I can grow in my backyard garden?
You don't say what part of the country you live in. I live on the eastern coast of U.S. I like dianthus, they smell nice and they come back again the following year.Along with daisys, which are easy, and morning glories or moonflowers, marigolds are easy, impatients, petunias, geraniams, , sunflowers do grow nice also, give them room to grow, they realy are large some brands. batchlor buttons, pansies, day lilies, there realy is alot to choose from. take a trip to your local green house and see for yourself,. You are bound to get ideas and advice from other nature lovers that will be shopping there.good luck.
Reply:Cannabis
Reply:go native plants
Reply:I am not really sure about flowering plants, but when I lived in Key Largo Florida, we had a shady garden under 3 or 4 low trees. We had alot of "creeping Jew"... I don't know the proper name for it, it is a purple and green leafed plant that doesn't flower, but is also great inside, and can grow huge.. It really is a pretty plant... Also, ferns grew really well there and all sorts of air plants oh, yeah,, and gardenias.. and night jasmine... which both smell fantastic if you have the room and a few years to let them grow...
Reply:you can grow sunflower in your garden. It is just easy to grow that plant and it is a beautiful for the garden
Reply:Any partly shade in you garden, if so tulips,iris,%26amp;gladiolas are fairly easy.
Reply:Chrysanthemums are very nice and come in a variety of colors so you can mix and match em or mix with other plants that will return the following year. Lily of the valley likes shaded areas along with ferns and pansys which all look good together. These plant will spread and you can then thin them and transfer them to other areas or give to a friend. These will all also return next year too. I also like bachelor buttons and sweet william, they spread quickly and seed so you can either collect the seeds and plant them in other areas or just let them do their thing. these are also in lots of mixed different colors. I especially like bachelor buttons because they are in pink, purple, blue and white....baby colors.very pretty.
Reply:not knowing your exact location or if you get much rain, here are my suggestions....

If shade then hostas, ferns, bleeding heart, choral bells, Solomon seal

If sun then Purple Cone Flower, Shasta Daisy, saliva,

As to bulbs.. you can't beat day lillies... Stella De ORE is great and blooms all summer... I also like Narcissus and Iphenium.. but they are in an area of my yard with "dampness"

I don't like annuals as they have to be replanted.

I live in a humid area... within zone 6/7

What are good moon garden flowers?

I want to have a moon garden and i already have pink jasmine, star jasmine, and purple leaf honeysuckle, im new to the gardening thing and was wondering if anyone knows of some really pretty flowers with fragrance? Thanks

What are good moon garden flowers?
Moon Flowers are a nice vine that bloom in the evening and in to night. Four O Clocks also bloom in the evening and on cloudy days and stay open through the evening. There are several varieties of flowering tobacco such as Nicotiana sylverstris that flower at night and have a nice scent. Other flowers that smell great can also work, such as lavender or roses. All of the above come in white flowers which show up with little light in the evening, with a some other colors available. You will also want to check your planting zone to see what plants are suitable for your climate.

I almost forgot, there are some plants that are mostly known for their silvery foliage that would also look nice such as artemisias and lambs ears. Some of these are also nicely scented.

Happy planting!
Reply:White petunias, sweet alyssum, lady slippers or snap dragons....all of these have a beautiful smell, are easy to grow and add some different textures to your moon garden!!
Reply:moon flower (Ipomoea alba) and angle's trumpet (Datura spp.) are my favorites. Both bear big, white flower (angel's trumpet also come in yellow, pink ...) and both are fragrant. Moon flower is an annual vine and angle's trumpet is a woody plant in warm climate. Moon flower bloom at night and gone in the day, angel's trumpet stay open for a couple days.
Reply:a moon garden would be at night? so morning glories make a moon flower.. they dont have a smell, but they open at night.. they are very pretty.... but they are viney, and need something to grow on.... good luck!

I was wondering the best garden flowers to dry?

I love drying flowers and have a great garden, does anyone know what flowers dry the best. I want to plant a cutting garden next year and was wondering what to grow?

I was wondering the best garden flowers to dry?
Air drying will give fast results and is recommended for these plants:

Yarrow - white and yellow flowering varieties dry best.

Artemesia - the perennial is a good base for wreaths.

Cockscomb Celosia - strip off the foliage.

Love in a Mist Nigella - wait until the seed pods are fully developed.

Peonies - hold over a steam kettle to loosen the petals prior to using the dried flowers.

Poppy Pods - pick when the pods are green.

Salvia - holds the color well and is good for substance in arrangements.

Ornamental grasses - harvest when the seed heads are fully open.

Bittersweet - plant both a male and a female for fruit.

Glycerin is used for green foliage plants to keep them looking fresh (dye can be added to enhance the color):

Sweet Annie Artemesia - harvest late summer when the flowers are yellow balls.

Statice - it can be dried but lasts longer in glycerin.

Goldenrod - cut before the first flowers open.

Some flowers do best with silica:

Creeping Zinnia

Rudbeckia - silica for three days and then spray front and back to seal.

Sunflowers - select ones with short petals such as Sunbright.

Look beyond the flower garden for items to use in arrangements. Sweet corn tassels for wreaths. Okra pods that are too large to eat are used in designs. Grains such as Oat, Wheat, and Milo can also be harvested and dried.
Reply:Roses
Reply:I like Hydrangea's, especially for fall wreath's, I dry them with a cheap hair spray..

What are some good beginner garden flowers and plants???

I am planning on starting a 4 foot by 4 foot garden. i would like some pretty flowers and plants but don't know where to start. What are some easy plants and flowers to grow?

What are some good beginner garden flowers and plants???
Zinnias, merigolds, and sunflowers are foolproof and will give you lots of bloom all summer long. I suggest that you shop around for your zinnias and sunflowers because there are many varieties to choose from. Get your Merigolds from a nursery. I also suggest that you get a copule of started vegetables at your nursery--2 tomatoes, 4 peppers, 4 eggplants, and 2 squash plants will give you lots to eat this summer and the merigolds will keep the bugs away. Best of luck. Have fun!
Reply:In a garden that small i would plant some wild flowers. You can buy these in rolls ready to plant. They are easy and very pretty!!!If you want you can grow flowers in half the garden and vegetables in the other half.
Reply:vinca, verbena, zinnia for a sunny spot.
Reply:get bugonias(if im spelling them right) they are so nice when they get to maturity. and they are tolerant too to sun and watering. but do water. they are great in pots and also lining driveways or whatevr. they get full and thick. awsome! but get them when little cause if you get them to late like at homedepot, and out grown their pots, they get lanky. so get them when they are small and theyll get nice and bushy.
Reply:I love Geraniums, very easy and you can even bring them in in winter and have as house plants, and you can take stems and root them.

I bought from this company and received them in two days and was very pleased, came by UPS in 2 1/2 in pots very healthy too

Reply:yOU NEED TO KNOW THINGS LIKE IS THE AREA IN THE SUN OR SHADE,THEN GET THE PROPPER PLANTS IN THE COLORS YOU LIKE.DONT PLANT THINGS TO CLOSE THEY WILL GET BIG AND FILL IN QUICK
Reply:As far as vegetables, you could put a few Cherry Tomatoe plants near the center, and a cucumber hill on one of each of the four corners, and let them vine outwards.

Both plants are incredibly simple to care for.

Good Luck.
Reply:hint easier to manage a few plants than tiring to drown that 4x4 foot plot.dig-n-turn the ground deep several times work a lot of fibrous matter in with a drink. before any planting, if that was to much work then any size garden will drown your ambition. menu 1st and 2nd year start with an annual array.

bachelor buttons zinnias easy and mid height very colorful fore o'clock a bit sprawling be nice on the out side and several asters to keep the bloomers to fall i like to lace a moss rose in on the edge . but remember you can thin and fill a lot. and you need a step in to keep weeds out.god bless
