I want to grow a flower garden in Ballarat Vic.?

But with the drought what should I plant? I'm a first time gardener.

I've never really been interested but now I have my own house and I'm finally interested. I have a front garden bed that gets full sun all day. It has two bushes already that have little purple flowers on them but I'm not sure what else to plant. I'd like flowers and it to be pretty. Can some one please help??

I'm in Queensland which is a little different climate but think first you need to get some good compost with some fertiliser and work that into the area where you wish to plant. Flowers to plant this time of year are violas, pansies, cinerarias and primulas. Violas and pansies would be a good start.

Happy gardening

To start a new flower garden, how deep do you dig it out?

I'm using the black mesh liner to prevent weeds and other things from growing in my new flower garden? I want to know how deep should I dig to get my garden and other grass even?

To start a new flower garden, how deep do you dig it out?
You should first remove the top 5 inches to get grass roots out of the garden. Then, till down at least 1-1/2 foot. It depends on what type of flowers you are going to use though. If you are using mostly bulbs, 18"'s is good enough. If the plants have "Tap" roots, like a tree, and your soil isn't right, you should go as deep as possible, adding mulch, sand, and black dirt to the total bed.

Good Luck and might I suggest you grow endangered plants native to your area? You can contact me at cmmckim@yahoo.com for help finding a list for the proper plants. It is very rewarding knowing you can help your native ground return to its "roots".
Reply:dig below the visible root systems that are present. usually round 4 inches.

God bless
Reply:For an easy way to do it, try a raised bed flower garden. You won't have to dig at all.

Garden Lovers - help! How can I make sure my garden plants stay healthy and will always bear flowers?
this is as easy as grow'n weeds. contact your local counties coop extension or farm advisor's office for expert, free help geared for your own area. find um in the gov pages of your phone book or on the web. these are smart people with nothing better to do then help you with your home garden problems. experts from your own neighborhood. growing flowers in new york and getting advise from a gardener in california? it's a no brain er. forget those costly gardening books. most are written by some guy who owns a condo in maine and hasn't even been in a garden in years. your tax money has been paying for those experts. use um. they are great.

Is there a foolproof way to tell weeds apart from flowers, when clearing a garden of weeds?

Depends on your definition of weed. The way I see it is that if you don't like it or dont want it - it's a weed. The following site is great for identifying them at both the seedling and flower stage. Good luck.

Not unless you are a botanist or a very experienced Gardner.

If you don't like the way it looks -pull it.

The weed or the'' blooma" will show its true 'face' soon enough- then you can decide weather you did a 'dastardly deed' or were very clever.

May I suggest plant markers next Spring!

What are good flowers/plants to plant in your front yard garden?
That depends a lot on where you are, what is available and how much time you want to invest in gardening.

Some plants require a lot less attention and others only live for one season (annuals).

Do some surfing to figure out what you'd like the front of your house to look like. Here is a free planning tool to help you:

Reply:I am not sure where you live but my best suggestion is Hybrid Day-lilies. They are basically maintenance free, heat and drought tolerant, bugs don't eat them and they are beautiful through out the summer although each flower last only one day, each plant bears dozens of flowers. You have hundreds, well thousands of varieties to choose from in many colors and heights and bloom sizes and the plants get bigger each year. They also have different bloom times, early, mid, and late so check this out if you buy them. Day-lilies like sun. Be careful you will become addicted to these plants!
Reply:I would say that it depends upon your taste-do you want a cottage garden look, or something more formal? Better Homes and Gardens has a great website with all types of garden plans-check them out.
Reply:Depends on which direction your garden is facing. North, South, East or West. Some plants do better in full sun, some in part sun, some partial shade, some full shade. Also, you didn't specify the climate. If you live in an arid climate different plants would be used than in a cool rainy climate. Go to your local gardening store, or buy (or use the library for) a book on gardening in your area. That will give you the proper soil conditions, the amount of sun your plant needs and the amount of water it needs. Picking a plant that thrives in your environment not only helps the environment, but makes it easy for you to have a showcase garden!
Reply:Well, let's see! There are tons of different flowers you could plant. Try bright colored flowers such as tulips, petunias, and iris. Roses would look nice too, but only plant roses if you are willing to hassle with them. Also, try small bushes. Those would look nice.

Some good tips are keep flowers watered DAILY! Also, make sure the flower or bush is getting the required amount of sunlight needed!

I hope this helps! = )

What are some pretty flowers to plant in a garden that last a long time and dont need to be replanted often?

~*~ I love zinnias and shasta daisies!!

What are some pretty flowers to plant in a garden that last a long time and dont need to be replanted often?
Roses - I have some of them for 20 years. Lillys, Iris, Margarets, Gazania (very beautiful) are long lasting and easy to keep. Passiflora coerulea and Strelitzia Reginae are apsolutly fabulous, but you can have them only if you live in mediterran area, they can die under 0 C.
Reply:try a variegated iris. they dont flower much, but the leaves are amazing. tulips are nice. also i love cammellias. these are not very cold hardy only to 5 with damage at 15.beautiful spring blooms and glossy leaves all year long.

also cannas these are perrenials cold hardy to 10.need water and LOTS of sun
Reply:I am an bearded iris fan. They come in a rainbow of colors, are perenial and multiply like crazy. They are nearly maintenance free and quite easy to grow. The site below offers hundreds of different varieties and colors.
Reply:Tulips, daffodils, hostas, lilys,
Reply:Any perennial will keep coming back if you feed it.
Reply:I have a flower bed in front of my house full of annual flowers of the sorts that self-seed and come back every year. Try cosmos, bachelor buttons and poppies! Just don't cut the heads off when they are finished flowering, and let the seeds fall on the ground. Or, you could save some of the seeds when the flowers are dried in case you want to re-plant in some areas.

How do I get rid of clover in a garden and not hurt my flowers?

My experience is anything you put out to kill the clover will also damage the plants around the clover. The only solution is pulling the clover, you need to get the roots also. Once this is accomplished a good layer of mulch 2-4" should discourage the "weeds" from coming back. I like to put a layer of newspaper under the mulch to help even more, usually 4-8 sheets thick.

Good luck!

How do I get rid of clover in a garden and not hurt my flowers?
I wouldn't do that. It attracts the bees.
Reply:Easy -- buy a sheep which hates clover
Reply:Pull them, leave no root behind.
Reply:is it essential? I think clover are pretty. The only thing I can think of is starting again from fresh with seed.
